Romford History
In a time where most of us are restricted to a one-stop shop at the supermarket, residents of Romford can enjoy the hustle and bustle of a market town, with easy access to food stalls, bakeries, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Dating back to around 1247, it originated as a sheep market, and is now renowned for being one of the largest and most reputable street markets in the South East of England. Romford also has its own claim to historical fame, with the story of Colonel Thomas Blood; an Irish scoundrel
who, after a failed plot trying to kidnap the Duke of Ormond from Dublin Castle, attempted to steal the crown jewels of King Charles II. Despite his crime, he was let off the hook and given £500 of land – not bad going for a crook. Some say that in 1680 when he died, his body was dug up as a result of claims that he had faked his own death
Historical markets and adventures aside, Romford also boasts two large shopping centres, Liberty and Liberty 2, which are situated on the edge of the old Roman road that runs from London to Colchester. Romford is also home to The Royal British Legion Band and Corps of Drums.
