Michelin Target F1 Comeback

February 16th, 2010

Word emanating from the world of F1 suggests Michelin Tyres are in advanced negotiations with the FIA regarding a dramatic return to F1. Michelin Managing Partner, Jean-Dominique Senard, is said to be holding “formal discussions” with the FIA regarding the possibility of Michelin returning as a tyre supplier to formula 1 for the 2011 season.

The discussions between Michelin and the FIA are said to be focused on highlighting the benefits the tyre can bring with better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Michelin are also believed to have requested the release of technical data from Bridgestone F1 Tyres for comparison.

Michelin have vast experience in F1 after supplying tyres for almost three decades before quitting in 2006 following the FIA decision to appoint Bridgestone Tyres as sole tyre supplier ending competition between tyre manufacturers.

Conti Seal – The Tyre That Seals It’s Own Punctures

February 14th, 2010

Continental Tyres have developed car tyres capable of self sealing punctures caused by a penetration of the tyre tread by a foreign object such as a nail or screw. The “Conti Seal” contains a sticky viscous layer on the inside of the tyre casing from shoulder to shoulder that seals punctures made by objects up to 5mm in diameter. The sealant in the tyre even prevents air loss in the event that the object that caused the puncture becomes dislodged.

The “Conti Seal” is not a run flat tyre and should not intentionally be driven under inflated or at zero pressure as this will result in irreparable damage to the tyre. Following a puncture, if the tyre has successfully managed to seal the damage, the tyre should be taken to a tyre specialist as soon as possible to determine if it needs a permanent repair.

The “Conti Seal” tyre has the same performance and characteristics as a standard Continental car tyres and are compatible with all common wheel rims without the requirement of a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).

As with any tyre, drivers using “Conti Seal” tyres should regularly inspect their car tyres for damage or loss of inflation pressure and if they are in any doubt, have the tyre inspected by a specialist.

Volkswagen appear to be sold on the idea of the Conti Seal and are fitting it as standard the the Volkswagen Passat CC.

How To Find Your Tyre Size

February 1st, 2010

When looking for the size of your car tyres the only accurate way to find it is to look on the sidewall of your tyre. Looking in your cars handbook or using registration look-ups provided by some websites are not accurate methods when looking for your tyre size.

The majority of cars now come with different size options for wheels and tyres so there is no such thing as a standard tyre size anymore. Add this to the fact that some cars have a different tyre size on the front to the tyre size on the rear. Finding your tyre size is easy if you know what to look for …

The tyre size will be on the sidewall of each tyre and will be set out in the following format although the numbers and letters could be different

205 / 55 R 16 91W

Explanation of the tyre size

205 "Tyre Width" in millimetres.
55 "Aspect Ratio" is the ratio of a tyre's width to it's height. In this case 55% of "Tyre Width"
R "Radial Construction". The tyres construction type.
16 "Rim Diameter" of the tyre in inches. In this case it is a 16" tyre.
91 "Load Rating" of the tyre. This is the maximum weight the tyre can carry. In this case 615 kg.
W "Speed Rating" of the tyre. The tyres maximum speed at maximum load. In this case 168 mph.

3G RFT – Bridgestone 3rd Generation Run-Flat Tyres

January 27th, 2010

Bridgestone TyresBridgestone Tyres are moving closer to the release of their “3rd Generation Run-Flat Tyres” or “3G RFT“. While run-flat tyres are designed with safety as a priority, they have a reputation for making the ride quality overly firm and uncomfortable due to the reinforced tyre sidewall. This has led many drivers to replace their run-flat tyres with conventional tyres.

Bridgestone claim that their latest 3rd generation run-flat tyres offer the same level of safety as previous run-flat tyres with vastly increased ride quality thanks to a tyre sidewall only 5% stiffer than a conventional tyre.

The key to reducing sidewall stiffness lies within “Heat Control”. When tyres are run at reduced or zero pressure, the friction on the distorted sidewall rapidly generates heat which can quickly destroy a tyre. Bridgestone Tyres have implemented three new technologies that reduce the heat generated by a tyre under run-flat conditions.

A new sidewall reinforced rubber reduces heat by 50% compared to previous run-flat tyres. Bridgestone have adopted “NanoPro-Tech” which reduces the friction that occurs between carbon molecules in the sidewall rubber which reduces heat build up. This allows for a softer tyre sidewall.

Run-Flat Tyre DeformationA “New Ply” fibre reduces tyre sidewall deformation by contracting as any heat builds up. This contraction of the tyre sidewall reduces deformation and prevents a rapid increase in temperature.

Bridgestone Cooling FinProtrusions in the tyre sidewall known as “Cooling Fins” create disturbances in the air flow around a tyre causing heat in the tyre sidewall to be reduced when driving on tyres that have zero pressure.

Tyre manufacturers are hoping this new run-flat technology will allow run-flat tyres to be produced in tyre sizes that have previously proved problematic increasing the safety for drivers across a broader range of vehicles.

Bridgestone have yet to confirm release dates and sizes for their 3rd generation run-flat tyres although they were hoping to launch them towards the end of 2009.

Cooper 4×4 Tyres Perform “Superbly” in Dakar Rally

January 22nd, 2010

Cooper Tyres Landcruiser KXRCooper Tyres have reason to be proud this month. Their Discoverer STT 4×4 off road tyre helped Dakar Rally veteran Xavier Foj to achieve 2nd place in the T2 production car class of the 2010 Dakar held in Argentina and Chile. Foj said that the Toyota Landcruiser KXR, along with the Cooper Discoverer STT tyres “have performed superbly”.

Cooper Discoverer STTTo further endorse the Discoverer STT tyres Foj said “the main quality of these tyres is their tremendous versatility. I can lower the tyre pressure to 0.6 bar without fear of the tyre coming off its rim and can even cover the odd section of track or link to another area of sand without the need to inflate again. The Discoverer STT tyres are outstanding due to their reliability and great capacity for adapting to any type of terrain, which is fundamental in a rally such as the Dakar where, in one single special stage, you can drive on very different surfaces.”
