With the debate now well underway in the UK as to whether there are real benefits from winter tyres, some people believe that you only need them to give you extra traction on the drive axle should you get stuck in snow. Fitting 2 tyres to just the front or rear of your car can imbalance the vehicle when you get more grip from one axle than the other.

Michelin show you exactly why 4 winter tyres are better than 2 in wintry conditions:

With the worst weather hitting the UK in decades there are demands to know why more hasn’t been done to ensure routes remain clear – after all, other countries seem to manage with a lot more snow and much lower temperatures than we get in the UK. Well, there is a little more to this than just blaming the gritters as it’s not the gritters blocking the roads – It’s often cars unable to get traction stopping the gritters getting around.

Winter Tyres vs Summer Tyres – The Auto Express Tyre Test

With snow on the ground not many of us would dream of walking to the shops in our slippers – The reason for this is that they are not suitable for the conditions outside – The same can be said for car tyres. Is is unreasonable to expect tyres to perform as well at -5°C as they do at +25°C and to get around this there are cold weather winter tyres that are up to the job and suited for the conditions. Cold weather tyres remain supple in lower temperatures and allow the tyre to get greater grip and keep you moving. Add this to the fact that cold weather winter tyres will provide better braking and handling on a dry or wet road surface when temperature fall below 7°C then you can see why so many people have opted to have them fitted in the UK this year.

We know winter tyres work which is why we fitted them across our entire fleet of mobile tyre fitting vehicles.

Winter tyres are a fairly new concept to the UK motorist but the fact is that a Cold Weather Tyre benefits the UK motorist for around 5 months of the year when temperatures are 7°C and below.

Find out how you can benefit and be safer with All Season Tyres or Cold Weather Tyres – Winter Tyres – Why ?

Last year, Event Tyres saw a massive surge in demand for Winter Tyres as severe weather was predicted and snow began to fall – For many people this was too late as stocks had already dried up. This year, Event Tyres have increased stocks of cold weather tyres to match the increased demand we are already experiencing.

Customers looking to purchase all season or cold weather tyres are urged to book as early as possible to secure stock as, with Event Tyres, you don’t pay a penny until we arrive to fit your tyres – Why choose Event Tyres ?

Remember how bad the weather was last year ? – These motorists in Reading will do …

Auto Express, Britain’s biggest selling weekly car magazine, has been busy putting winter tyres to the test against conventional summer tyres on a frozen lake in Arvidsjaur, northern Sweden – with some very interesting results.

While attitudes towards cold weather tyres or winter tyres are changing, there is still the belief by many British motorists that “We don’t get enough snow to make them worth while” or that they “Are only good for a couple of weeks in the year” – If you are one of these motorist who still need convincing of the benefits that winter tyres bring then read on ….

Auto Express carried out 3 tests for Snow Braking, Snow Traction and Snow Handling using a mixture of cold weather, all season and summer tyres including Continental Winter Contact, Dunlop Winter Sport 3D, Vredestein Quatrac (all season), Vredestein Xtreme (winter tyre), Goodyear Ultragrip 7+, Pirelli Sotto Zero, Nokian Wr-G2 and the Continental Sport Contact 2 summer tyre.

Snow Braking Test:

The results showed the fastest braking tyre was Goodyear’s Ultragrip 7+ which managed to stop in less than 18 metres. The Continental Sport Contact 2 summer tyre took 43.14 metres in like for like testing. This equates to around 6 car lengths. The Continental summer tyres was still traveling at 20 mph at the point where the Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ had stopped !!

Snow Traction Test:

The traction test consisted of accelerating from walking pace until the tyres on the test car began to spin. This test again showed the Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ as the top performer with 300% more grip than the Continental summer tyre.

Snow Handling Test:

The purpose built Skanska snow handling track was the location of the final snow test. At 500 metres long and consisting of hairpins and long sweeping off camber turns this environment is perfect for test the limitations of the tyres on test.

The tests were based on lap times with the traction control both on and off and the winning Continental Winter Contact managed to complete the track just under a minute faster than it’s summer equivalent.

Auto Express says the winter tyres inspired confidence and have a big advantage over summer patterns used by the majority of uk drivers by offering huge advantages in grip and safety in cold weather.

For further information on Winter Tyres, Cold Weather Tyres or Snow Tyres visit “Winter Tyres – Why ?”

Auto Express also went on to test these tyres in rain conditions as well as seeing how they faired in all year usage. For further information or more depth on the tests carried out by Auto Express you can find it in their latest magazine under “Best Winter Tyres Tested – Why You MUST Fit Them” dated 27th October 2010 (No. 1,138).

With the winter of 2009 fresh in the memories of motorists, many appear to have understood the message that cold weather / winter tyres are not just for snow and ice.

Winter tyres provide safer driving conditions for around 5 months of the year in the UK when temperatures fall below 7°C.

Winter 2009 saw the stock of cold weather tyres dry up very quickly and Event Tyres advise drivers to order their tyres in advance to secure stock. Remember that Event Tyres do not require payment until we arrive to fit your tyres.

For advice on how to stay safe this winter or to discuss exactly how winter tyres will benefit you feel free to contact us.

A recent investigation by Birmingham Trading Standards revealed 90% of part worn tyres failed to meet the minimum legal standard. Among the tyres which failed were problems such as embedded nails, illegal tread depth, exposed cords, inadequate sidewall markings and unbelievably one tyre which was 17 years old !

Birmingham Trading Standards regularly keep a close eye on part worn tyre dealers and 2010 was their 9th annual investigation which saw them buy 10 part worn tyres from across Birmingham. In this year’s survey 30 percent of tyres had structural failings including illegal tread depth and a nail embedded in the casing while 90 percent did not have the correct markings, required by law, which identify them as a part worn tyre.

The thing to remember with part worn tyres is that they have been removed from another vehicle for a reason - Maybe a puncture that someone else has deem unsafe to repair, removed from a vehicle written off in an accident, replaced due to signs of the ageing of the tyre or simply that someone wanted different tyres. The fact is with a part worn tyre there is no history or integrity that can be associated with it.

A recent customer was sent to our Manchester Depot, by a local part worn dealer in Manchester, to have her Tracking checked having spent £80.00 having 4 x part worn 155/70R13 tyres fitted to her VW Polo.

Of the 4 x tyres fitted, only the front wheels had been balanced, all the wheels still had the old balance weights attached, no new valves had been fitted, both rears were cracked showing signs of the age of the tyres (2002) and the OSF was a directional tyre fitted the wrong way round. This customer said she drives to Germany twice a year.

In the example above, the customer could have purchased 4 x brand new 155/70R13 tyres for £146.84 compared with the £80.00 she spent on the part worns. A new tyre comes with 8mm of tread compared to the 5mm on the part worn. The safe usable tread on the new tyres would be 6mm and 3mm on the part worns. The legal limit is 1.6mm and Event Tyres recommend changing tyres at 2mm or more.

So, the cost per usable mm of tread from a new tyre (6mm) would have been £6.12 compared to £6.67 for the part worn tyre (3mm) - With the new tyre having 50% more usable tread.

So before you dash down to your local part worn tyre dealer for a bargain, consider whether they will do the job to the standard you expect, whether you can trust the tyre being fitted is safe and whether what seems a good deal is really as good as you think.

Event Tyres do not supply Part Worn Tyres & do not recommend their use.

When looking for the size of your car tyres the only accurate way to find it is to look on the sidewall of your tyre. Looking in your cars handbook or using registration look-ups provided by some websites are not accurate methods when looking for your tyre size.

The majority of cars now come with different size options for wheels and tyres so there is no such thing as a standard tyre size anymore. Add this to the fact that some cars have a different tyre size on the front to the tyre size on the rear. Finding your tyre size is easy if you know what to look for …

The tyre size will be on the sidewall of each tyre and will be set out in the following format although the numbers and letters could be different

205 / 55 R 16 91W

[TABLE=2]
