European regulation 1222/2009 means that customers buying tyres will have a better understanding of what they can expect from their purchase in relation to safety (wet braking) as well as the impact on the environment (rolling resistance & external noise). This information will be presented in a similar way to the label commonly found when buying electrical appliances such as a fridge.

The truth is, more and more motorists are forgetting the golden rule of “Safety First” when opting for a tyre that has been used previously and removed from another vehicle.

A month long investigation by TyreSafe, one of the UK’s leading tyre safety orginisations, where 50 part worn tyres were purchased found a staggering 98% of tyres tested were illegal with over a third found to contain potentially dangerous forms of damage or non compliance. One tyre had “the potential to kill” after an inspection revealed a 5cm metal object penetrating the tread in a manner that could have resulted in a sudden and total tyre failure – commonly known as a “blow out”. Other damaged included dangerous repairs, exposed internal cords, bead damage and evidence of damaged caused by running the tyre under inflated following a puncture.

The thing to remember when considering part worn tyres is that they have all been removed from vehicles for a reason whether it be that someone else deemed the tyre unsafe for repair, the vehicle was written off in an accident, replacement due to aging / cracking or simply that another driver decided they no longer wanted the tyres on their vehicle.

This investigation follows a previous investigation by Birmigham Trading Standards in 2010 that found one tyre being sold as a part worn was 17 years old.

If you knew the tyre was dangerous and had the potential to kill would you probably not have it fitted – The problem is that those who know better are the ones fitting them in full knowledge of what they are doing.

Buying tyres will soon become a lot easier for motorists thanks to an EU Regulation (1222/2009) introducing informative tyre labelling.

This new familiar looking tyre label is a major advance in consumer information and includes a tyres performance in “Wet Braking”, “Fuel Consumption” as well as “External Noise”. The labels design is based around those currently used on new household appliances and is intended to allow consumers to make an informed choice when purchasing new tyres.

With a rating between “A” and “G”, the difference may not always be totally clear. Tyres are responsible for around 20% of a vehicles fuel consumption so the difference between an “A” rated tyre and a “G” rated tyre is around 0.5 litres per 62 miles or 100 Kilometers which is around 80 litres of fuel based on 10,000 miles per year. This equates to more than £100 saving with a litre of fuel costing £1.30.

The difference between an “A” rated tyre and a “F” rated tyre in “Wet Braking” is over 10 metres which is equivalent to two car lengths. The “G” grade is not used in the “Wet Braking” category as this is safety related.

This new tyre labelling is scheduled to be introduced in November 2012.
