A recent survey by Event Mobile Tyres on vehicle having tyre replacements, that were fitted with either a full size spare tyre or a space saver, has found 39% of vehicles checked had spare tyres deemed to be unsafe or unusable. Of 200 vehicle checked, 59 had tyres more than 10 PSI below the recommended pressure while 19 had tyres that were punctured – 4 of which had damaged sidewalls.
When the drivers were advised, the majority said they checked their tyre pressures “fairly” regularly but were unaware that an unused spare tyre will gradually loose pressure over time.
