Conti Seal – The Tyre That Seals It’s Own Punctures

Continental Tyres have developed car tyres capable of self sealing punctures caused by a penetration of the tyre tread by a foreign object such as a nail or screw. The “Conti Seal” contains a sticky viscous layer on the inside of the tyre casing from shoulder to shoulder that seals punctures made by objects up to 5mm in diameter. The sealant in the tyre even prevents air loss in the event that the object that caused the puncture becomes dislodged.

The “Conti Seal” is not a run flat tyre and should not intentionally be driven under inflated or at zero pressure as this will result in irreparable damage to the tyre. Following a puncture, if the tyre has successfully managed to seal the damage, the tyre should be taken to a tyre specialist as soon as possible to determine if it needs a permanent repair.

The “Conti Seal” tyre has the same performance and characteristics as a standard Continental car tyres and are compatible with all common wheel rims without the requirement of a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).

As with any tyre, drivers using “Conti Seal” tyres should regularly inspect their car tyres for damage or loss of inflation pressure and if they are in any doubt, have the tyre inspected by a specialist.

Volkswagen appear to be sold on the idea of the Conti Seal and are fitting it as standard the the Volkswagen Passat CC.

Continental Sport Contact 4 – You’ll Be Lucky

Continental Tyres have recently launched the Sport Contact 5 P their latest ultra high performance tyre. Prior to the release of the Sport Contact 5 P the offering from Continental Tyres was the Sport Contact 3. So the question is – What happened to the Sport Contact 4 ?

Continental Tyres spend millions of pounds on research into all aspects of tyre production from materials to the compound of the rubber but it doesn’t end there …

Uniroyal Tyres, which is part of the Continental AG Group, had little success with its “Rallye 440″ tyre in the Far East and when they looked at it a little harder they found that “4″ was considered an unlucky number within many cultures in this part of the world.

Continental Tyres say they learnt a lesson from this and that’s why the Sport Contact jumped from Sport Contact 3 to Sport Contact 5.

Michelin Pilot Sport 3 vs Continental Sport Contact 5

2010 looks to be a big year for the tyre manufacturers with the new offerings from Michelin Tyres and Continental Tyres both available from January 1st. Michelin’s Pilot Sport 3 and Continental’s Sport Contact 5 are built on years of success from the Michelin Pilot range and the Continental Sport Contact range.

Both Michelin and Continental are targeting areas such as shorter stopping distances, improved handling and a reduction in aquaplaning. Both tyre manufacturers also have homologations (approvals) from many manufacturers for original equipment fitments.

With both the Pilot Sport 3 and the Sport Contact 5 promising so much it will be interesting to see how they both perform in 2010.

New Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (PS3)

Michelin Tyres are set to roll out the Pilot Sport 3 (PS3) in 18 sizes on January 1st 2010 with 10 further sizes to be launched between July 2010 and Oct 2010. January 1st also coincides with the release of the Continental Sport Contact 5.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 3 follows the success stories of the Pilot Sport and Pilot Exalto range which had over 200 homologations (approvals) from car manufacturers including Audi, Porsche, BMW, Ferrari and Merecedes to name a few. The Michelin Pilot Sport was also fitted to a Bugatti Veyron which set a world speed record of over 250 mph in 2005.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 3 promises better road holding in bends, up to 3 metres shorter braking distance on wet roads, very precise steering and outstanding energy efficiency and mileage.

New Continental Sport Contact 5 P

Continental Tyres are set to unleash their ultra high performance tyre – the Sport Contact 5 P at the turn of the year. This new tyre has been developed and tested in conjunction between Continental Tyres and their OE partners to ensure maximum safety and driving pleasure. The Continental Sport Contact 5 P promises Shorter Stopping Distances, Protection Against Aquaplaning, Excellent Handling (including superb grip and stability when cornering) and a Smooth and Quiet Drive.

The Sport Contact 5 P is OE on the Audi TT RS, Audi RS4, Audi R8, Renault Megane RS and Mercedes E-Class AMG.

With safety in mind, Continental Tyres have also designed the Sport Contact 5 P with a 3mm tread wear indicator to alert the consumer that the tyre is getting close to requiring replacement.

Already available are 235/35ZR19 91Y Sport Contact 5 P (Renault Megane RS) and 255/30ZR20 92Y Sport contact 5 P (Audi TT RS) with more tyre sizes due to become available during the first quarter of 2010.
