Conti Seal – The Tyre That Seals It’s Own Punctures

Continental Tyres have developed car tyres capable of self sealing punctures caused by a penetration of the tyre tread by a foreign object such as a nail or screw. The “Conti Seal” contains a sticky viscous layer on the inside of the tyre casing from shoulder to shoulder that seals punctures made by objects up to 5mm in diameter. The sealant in the tyre even prevents air loss in the event that the object that caused the puncture becomes dislodged.

The “Conti Seal” is not a run flat tyre and should not intentionally be driven under inflated or at zero pressure as this will result in irreparable damage to the tyre. Following a puncture, if the tyre has successfully managed to seal the damage, the tyre should be taken to a tyre specialist as soon as possible to determine if it needs a permanent repair.

The “Conti Seal” tyre has the same performance and characteristics as a standard Continental car tyres and are compatible with all common wheel rims without the requirement of a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).

As with any tyre, drivers using “Conti Seal” tyres should regularly inspect their car tyres for damage or loss of inflation pressure and if they are in any doubt, have the tyre inspected by a specialist.

Volkswagen appear to be sold on the idea of the Conti Seal and are fitting it as standard the the Volkswagen Passat CC.

Winter Travel Advice during Christmas and New Year

With Christmas and New Year just around the corner many families will be preparing to visit relatives up and down the UK. We all see the cars going up and down the motorways loaded up with the kids, presents, luggage and often even the family pooch. The last thing you need is a tyre problem. The thought of unloading the family and contents on to the hard shoulder so you can get to your spare tyre is not a pleasent one.

While not all problems can be prevented, there are ways that you can minimise the risk.

Make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure – Including the spare. We highlighted recently that drivers often do not check their spare tyres so having a puncture, unloading the car and finding your spare tyre flat or damaged is a problem you do not need.

Check your tyres for damage. Look for any cuts or tears to the tyre sidewall and check the tyre tread for any objects that may have punctured the tyre – Not all punctured tyres deflate immediately.

Check the tread depth of your tyres. While a tyre with 2mm of tread is legal, it does not necessarily mean it is safe enough to go driving on snow or ice fully loaded.

While writing your list for Santa this year, just make another little note to check your tyres and make Christmas and New Year a happy experience for you, your family and other road users.
