The beginning of September has already seen a hugh rise in demand for winter tyres. With the winter of 2009 fresh in the memories of motorists, many appear to have understood the message that cold weather / winter tyres are not just for snow and ice.

Winter tyres provide safer driving conditions for around 5 months of the year in the UK when temperatures fall below 7°C.

Winter 2009 saw the stock of cold weather tyres dry up very quickly and Event Tyres advise drivers to order their tyres in advance to secure stock. Remember that Event Tyres do not require payment until we arrive to fit your tyres.

For advice on how to stay safe this winter or to discuss exactly how winter tyres will benefit you feel free to contact us.

A recent investigation by Birmingham Trading Standards revealed 90% of part worn tyres failed to meet the minimum legal standard. Among the tyres which failed were problems such as embedded nails, illegal tread depth, exposed cords, inadequate sidewall markings and unbelievably one tyre which was 17 years old !

Birmingham Trading Standards regularly keep a close eye on part worn tyre dealers and 2010 was their 9th annual investigation which saw them buy 10 part worn tyres from across Birmingham. In this year’s survey 30 percent of tyres had structural failings including illegal tread depth and a nail embedded in the casing while 90 percent did not have the correct markings, required by law, which identify them as a part worn tyre.

The thing to remember with part worn tyres is that they have been removed from another vehicle for a reason - Maybe a puncture that someone else has deem unsafe to repair, removed from a vehicle written off in an accident, replaced due to signs of the ageing of the tyre or simply that someone wanted different tyres. The fact is with a part worn tyre there is no history or integrity that can be associated with it.

A recent customer was sent to our Manchester Depot, by a local part worn dealer in Manchester, to have her Tracking checked having spent £80.00 having 4 x part worn 155/70R13 tyres fitted to her VW Polo.

Of the 4 x tyres fitted, only the front wheels had been balanced, all the wheels still had the old balance weights attached, no new valves had been fitted, both rears were cracked showing signs of the age of the tyres (2002) and the OSF was a directional tyre fitted the wrong way round. This customer said she drives to Germany twice a year.

In the example above, the customer could have purchased 4 x brand new 155/70R13 tyres for £146.84 compared with the £80.00 she spent on the part worns. A new tyre comes with 8mm of tread compared to the 5mm on the part worn. The safe usable tread on the new tyres would be 6mm and 3mm on the part worns. The legal limit is 1.6mm and Event Tyres recommend changing tyres at 2mm or more.

So, the cost per usable mm of tread from a new tyre (6mm) would have been £6.12 compared to £6.67 for the part worn tyre (3mm) - With the new tyre having 50% more usable tread.

So before you dash down to your local part worn tyre dealer for a bargain, consider whether they will do the job to the standard you expect, whether you can trust the tyre being fitted is safe and whether what seems a good deal is really as good as you think.

Event Tyres do not supply Part Worn Tyres & do not recommend their use.

Potholes have appeared all across the UK road network causing yet more misery for drivers as tyre after tyre is damaged. Potholes are causing impact damaged to tyres resulting in failure of the tyres internal construction. Potholes have always been a problem on UK roads but the severe winter weather of the last month appears to have increased the number sharply as many more drivers are reporting hitting potholes and damaging their tyres.

Event Tyres urge drivers to inspect their tyres before each journey and look for signs such as a bulge or an “egg” on the sidewall as an impact damaged tyre may not only remain inflated but the signs of impact damage may not be immediately visible. Light impact damage can gradually get worse as the vehicle is used.

Tyre damage and snow and ice are not always things motorists would put together – but they certainly should. With a blanket of snow covering much of the UK it becomes increasingly difficult for drivers as they can not always see things clearly such as kerbs, potholes and hidden debris concealed by the snow.

Its very easy to get caught out by a kerb covered in snow or ice whether your are simply trying to park or whether you slide resulting in contact. As well as possible mechanical damage, this could lead to a damaged tyre sidewall. If you kerb your tyre, the friction between the kerb and the tyre can cause it to tear the sidewall of the tyre. In some cases you can pinch the tyre releasing some of the air before it reseals again leaving you with a dangerously under inflated tyre.

Potholes are a particularly bad problem at this time of year. When water freezes below the road surface it expands and raises the tarmac. When temperatures climb the ice melts and leaves a void under the surface. As tyres pass over the damaged area the tarmac is pushed back down and cracks. This causes the tarmac to break away leaving a pothole. Potholes can cause “Impact Damage” to a tyre resulting in failure of the internal components of the tyre. Failure of the tyres structure can cause the tyre to go out of shape, bulge at the sidewall or even blowout.

Winter has take a firm grip on the UK this year and Event Tyres have seen a massive increase in customers purchasing winter tyres. The fact that winter tyres perform best at temperatures below 7°C means that they can provide safer diving conditions for around 5-6 months of the year in the UK.

Maybe we can look at this another way …

When the pavements are covered in snow or ice, most people automatically think of changing their footwear to a more suitable type – For instance, with snow and ice on the ground it would be inconceivable to wear a pair of leather soled shoes as you would have no grip whatsoever. The same principle applies to your car tyres. You cannot expect a car tyre to be suitable for every condition. A standard car tyre can get clogged up with snow and ice and add to this the fact that the rubber gets stiffer, providing less grip, you basically have the leather sole shoe situation with your car.

Winter tyres are a huge safety advancement in motoring and a sound investment in your pocket. Consider fitting winter tyres and benefit from better grip at lower temperatures, better grip in snow and ice and shorter stopping distances of 10% in rain and 20% in snow.

A recent study by Tyresafe has found that, in wet conditions, a tyre with 2mm of remaining tread depth can reduce your stopping distance by 17 metres compared to a tyre with just 1mm of remaining tread. This equates to approximately 4 car lengths. With the current legal tread depth set at 1.6mm it’s easy to see why calls are being made to change the UK minimum legal tread depth to 3mm. Motoring expert Quentin Willson presents the importance of checking your tyres.

One of the easiest ways to check your remaining tread depth is to use a 20p coin. Place the 20p coin between the tread grooves on your tyre and look for any of the visible banding around the coin. If you can see any of the banding on the coin then your tyres may be illegal. The video below contains a detailed explanation as well an eye opening stopping distance test on 1mm tyres and 2mm tyres.

Of 200 vehicle checked, 59 had tyres more than 10 PSI below the recommended pressure while 19 had tyres that were punctured – 4 of which had damaged sidewalls.

When the drivers were advised, the majority said they checked their tyre pressures “fairly” regularly but were unaware that an unused spare tyre will gradually loose pressure over time.

Tyre pressures are one of the main things drivers fail to check on a regular basis. Failing to check your tyre pressures can lead to under-inflated tyres overheating and fuel costs increasing by 2.5%.

Tyre pressures are one of the main things drivers fail to check on a regular basis. Failing to check your tyre pressures can lead to under-inflated tyres overheating and fuel costs increasing by 2.5%. The reason for this is that under-inflated tyres cause a higher rolling resistance which means the engine has to consume more fuel to maintain speed.

We have all seen someone “kick” a tyre to determine if it feels as hard as the last time they “kicked” it – but, believe it or not, there is a better and safer way to check the pressures of your car tyres that only takes a couple of minutes once or twice a month.

Vehicle manufacturers all produce recommended tyre pressures for the vehicles they produce. These tyre pressures are usually listed in the handbook, inside the driver’s door pillar or inside the fuel filling cap. Check your tyre size (eg: 195/65R15 91V) against the listings as some vehicles are equipped with alternative tyre sizes depending on model and production year.

Almost everyone who drives fills up with fuel at least once a month. Most petrol stations have air and water which is either free or around 20p so there really is no excuse.

Keep your tyres correctly inflated and you could be 2-5 pence per litre better off than before.
