What are Off-Road Tyres?
4x4 and off-road tyres are a specific type of tyre that use deep tread to provide more traction on unpaved surfaces such as loose dirt, mud, sand or gravel and they have grown in popularity thanks to next-generation vehicles which have emerged over the last decade.
These are all high-performance vehicles which require more durable tyres to deliver lots of grip, whilst being able to withstand the more difficult road surfaces that you would expect a 4x4 to encounter.
As off-roading has become increasingly popular, many tyre manufacturers have created increasingly superior tyre treads. With each new generation of tyre improving on the last, we're now in a golden era of off-road driving with exceptional levels of performance handed to drivers.
The Difference Between Off-Road Tyres and Road Tyres
The obvious differences are visual – 4x4 tyres are simply bigger than, for instance, car tyres. However, 4x4 tyres are also specifically designed with off-road environments and varying terrain in mind, so they will handle in a different way to car tyres in different conditions.
Obviously, car tyres are manufactured for use on tarmac. 4x4 tyres ae primarily for use across terrain such as mud, dirt, grass, and snow to name but a few. The major difference in the compounds is the tread patterns used with off-road tyres – they are much deeper, with huge gaps in the tread pattern to secure excellent grip on difficult road surfaces.
Types of Off-Road Tyres
Most tyre manufacturers produce a range of 4x4 tyres. These include off-road, all-terrain, mud and snow (M+S), and high-performance ranges. If you're planning on going off-roading, however, do bear in mind the type of tyre you'll need for your circumstances.
High-Performance: This premium range is designed primarily for use on road opposed to off-road. With many high-performance 4x4s capable of speeds in excess of 150 mph, these tyres provide excellent traction and stability whilst dealing with the increased weight of the vehicle and extra load on the tyres.
Run-Flat: These are designed to keep your vehicle under control in the event of pressure loss to your tyres whether it be a puncture or a complete tyre failure which is often referred to as a 'blow out'.
The tyres have a reinforced sidewall capable of supporting the weight of the 4x4 with zero air pressure. This extra strength helps to maintain control of the vehicle following a sudden loss of air. After this, you can drive to a garage or get a call out for a fitting service to get a suitable replacement.
Winter: This seasonal variety is just as beneficial to a 4x4 vehicle as a standard car. With the majority of these vehicles being produced on tyres designed primarily for on-road use, come winter time when the temperature drops below 7°C, the performance from the tyres gets less as the rubber stiffens.
This ultimately means if your 4x4 tyres can't grip, it doesn't matter whether you have four or six wheel drive, you'll struggle to get moving. Consequently, the winter variety work best at temperatures below 7°C and are designed to provide traction on snow, ice, and mud.
All Terrain: All-terrain tyres are generally designed as 50% on-road and 50% off-road. These provide the perfect option for owners who like to make the most of their 4x4 as they provide decent levels of grip on the road whilst maintaining decent performance off-road.
